The Spring Edit

Tulips, narcissi and ranunculus — the first bulbs worth buying, arranged the way the market sells them.

The Spring Edit — the full arrangement

Spring flowers behave differently from everything else we sell. Tulips keep growing in the vase — a stem can add two centimetres after cutting — and narcissi release sap that shortens the life of any other flower sharing their water. Both facts shape how we make this bouquet.

We condition narcissi on their own for at least six hours before they meet the tulips, and we tell you to keep them apart on the first night if you split the bunch. It is the kind of detail that separates a bouquet that lasts five days from one that lasts seven.

The palette is deliberately bright: yellow tulips, white narcissi, a lilac muscari or two. Spring is the one season where we allow the arrangement to be cheerful rather than restrained.

Care

Three things that buy you four more days

Every bouquet leaves with a printed card. This is the long version.

01

Keep narcissi apart for a night

Their sap is toxic to other stems in the same water. If you are splitting the bunch, put narcissi in their own vase for the first night, then rinse the stems before mixing.

02

Tulips move

They will lean towards the light and keep growing. That is normal. Rotate the vase a quarter turn each morning if you want them upright; leave them if you like the curve.

03

Cold water only

Spring bulbs hate warm water. Refresh daily and keep the vase out of the sun.

How we would send it

Notes from the studio

  • Ask for all-white for a sympathy house; we will swap the yellow tulips for white ones.
  • For Easter tables, order two Classics rather than one Grand and run them down the middle.
  • Do not put this bouquet next to a fruit bowl — narcissi and ripening fruit are a bad combination.

Questions

Before you order

When is this available?
February to late April, depending on the season. When the bulbs finish we replace the page with the Summer Edit rather than selling forced flowers at a premium.
Why are narcissi separate?
Their stems release a sap that blocks the water uptake of other flowers. Conditioning them apart for six hours solves most of it, and we do that before the bouquet leaves the bench.
