The Autumn Edit — the full arrangement

Dahlias are the best and most difficult flower of the year. The heads are extraordinary — layered, geometric, almost too much — and the stems are hollow, which means they bruise, crimp and give up faster than anything else in the studio. We cut them long, condition them in deep cool water, and keep them away from the door.

The rest of the bouquet is built to support them: bronze chrysanthemums with the same density, seed heads for silhouette, and a few berry branches to carry the color into the foliage. It is a warm bouquet without being orange.

Autumn is short. From the first week of September to the first frost, and then it is over. We do not stretch it with imported dahlias; when the season ends, this page changes.

Care

Three things that buy you four more days

Every bouquet leaves with a printed card. This is the long version.

01

Deep, cool water

Dahlias have hollow stems and drink heavily. Fill the vase to two-thirds and top up daily; a dry afternoon is enough to end them.

02

Do not re-cut too short

The hollow stem collapses if you cut it more than once. Cut 2cm when you unwrap, then change water without re-cutting unless the end looks brown.

03

Keep away from heat

A radiator or a sunny windowsill will finish a dahlia in a day. Cool hallway, indirect light.

How we would send it

Notes from the studio

  • For a Thanksgiving table, ask for the Grand in a low vessel and we will cut the stems down for you.
  • Pair with the dried Everlasting bunch if you want the arrangement to outlast the week.
  • Ask for extra seed heads if the room is large; they carry at a distance.

Questions

Before you order

How long is the season?
September to the first hard frost, usually late October. We stop when the local crop stops rather than importing.
My dahlias drooped on day two. Why?
Almost always warm water or a warm room. Re-cut 1cm, change to cool water, and move the vase away from direct sun — most recover within a few hours.
