Pastel Hour — the full arrangement

Pastel is harder than it looks. Put five pale flowers together and the result is often sweet rather than elegant. The fix is contrast in texture: a soft peony against the waxy stem of lisianthus, stock standing straight behind it, and one butter-yellow rose to stop the whole thing going pink.

We make this bouquet mostly in late spring and early summer, when peonies are worth buying. Outside that window we substitute garden roses and the price drops; we will tell you which version you are getting before you confirm.

It is the bouquet we send to new parents, to a housewarming, and to anyone whose taste you are not completely sure of. Pastel forgives.

Care

Three things that buy you four more days

Every bouquet leaves with a printed card. This is the long version.

01

Peonies are thirsty

Fill the vase higher than you would for roses — two-thirds — and top it up daily. A peony that runs dry for an afternoon will not recover.

02

Handle buds gently

Peony buds arrive tight and slightly sticky. Do not force them open; warmth and time do it. If you need them open for a date, keep the vase in the warmest room, not in sunlight.

03

Re-cut on day three

Cut 1cm and change the water. Lisianthus stems soften quickly in old water and start to bend.

How we would send it

Notes from the studio

  • For a baby gift, ask for the Petite in a low vase — new parents rarely have a tall one.
  • Pair with a short card; the bouquet is quiet and a long message fights it.
  • In peony season, order on a Monday for a Friday delivery; the buds will be open by the weekend.

Questions

Before you order

Is it available all year?
The peony version runs from late April to early July. Outside that we make it with garden roses and the price is $12 lower.
Will the pink be strong?
No. It is a soft, dusty pink rather than a hot one. If you want saturation, the Rose Atelier in its deeper antique pink is the better choice.
